One Day road trip on South Africa’s West Coast

South Africa has lots of beautiful towns and countryside to offer. I really want to urge you to rent a car for one day and travel!

Our one day road trip included the Boland area of South Africa – Paarl, Wellington, and the Swartland area of Darling and then back down the West Coast, including Yzerfontein, Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand to Cape Town.

Our morning started off with breakfast at Strand, situated on False Bay in the Cape. It is a beautiful holiday town with lots of coffee shops, cafes and a pretty white sandy beach.

We drove inland through Stellenbosch to the winelands of Paarl and Wellington. When we reached Riebeeck Kasteel, we turned off towards Malmesbury. This road leads to a quint little town called Darling. Darling is famous for the South African celebrity, Peter-Dirk Uys/Evita Bezuidenhout, who calls Darling home. He has a cabaret theatre and restaurant there called Evita se Perron, a clever play on words!

From Darling we drove to Yzerfontein, with South Africa’s longest sandy beach and old iron mines. We had a relaxing coffee at cute coffee shop, overlooking the ocean and fynbos.

You could continue further North past the West Coast National Park to the picturesque fishing village, Paternoster, all the way to St Helena Bay. Since we’ve done that on previous occasions, we skipped it this time.

We took the stunning West Coast drive back with small towns along the way, Grotto Bay, Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand. We were in luck as the various field flowers (fynbos) were still in bloom after the rains, a spectacular sight! If you want to plan your trip around the Fynbos flowering season, please use the guide from Cape Town Tourism.

Bloubergstrand has an uninterrupted view over the whole of Table Mountain and is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Definitely have a meal at one of the restaurants, or just go for sundowners. There is a great beach for surfing and kite-surfing, but maybe a little cold for swimming!
